There are so many fun Peoria IL holiday activities to partake in. One of Dr. Justin Tuttle favorites is the Peoria IL Holiday Festival of Lights. One of the largest lighted nighttime festivals in the nation, the Festival of Lights officially began Thursday, November 28, 2013 and continues through December 31, 2013.
Peoria IL Festival of Lights
The Festival of Lights annual Parade of Lights covers three miles of Washington Street starting on one side of the city and ending just past downtown. The main attraction is the two-mile long Winter Wonderland driving tour of larger-than-life objects fashioned out of tiny colored lights. The parade features more than 20 floats shaped entirely from lights, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the chopper motorcycle float illuminated with LED lights, a 70-foot long float of the famous Clydesdale horse team pulling a delivery wagon, Frosty the Snowman, the starship Enterprise illuminated with 48,000 LED light bulbs, and the 95-foot-long smoke-spewing China dragon. The parade ends with a bang as fireworks light up the evening sky.
Area residents and visitors from near and far make this event a family tradition. Following the Parade of Lights, FOLEPI’s Winter Wonderland inspires holiday cheer in the young and old alike. This two-mile journey through a dazzling electric park offers the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit.
Such an extensive introduction is entirely appropriate for the smorgasbord of holiday-themed events which comprise the festival. These include FOLEPI’s Village, where Santa resides; FOLEPI’s Riverfront Promenade, a walking tour of lighted displays along the riverfront; an indoor laser light show featuring holiday music and graphics; and a 24-hour narrated Nativity scene. Hot air balloon rides, a community sing-a-long, lunch with Santa, a run/walk and the Festival of Lights Queen Pageant are among the other events.
Peoria IL is a great place to capture the magic of the holiday season.
